following their release of the michael turtle 12inch last year, music from memory now publish phantoms of dreamland a compilation of works by the uk musician recorded between 1983-1985. tip! this double lp features tracks drawn from the recording sessions for turtles album music from the living room and also collects material turtle recorded shortly after that, for an album which would never materialise. with three tracks taken from music from the living room’ and the rest of the compilation entirely made up of unreleased tracks, phantoms of dreamland draws on an illustrious period for michael.

oona dahl joined us at all day i dream last year both as a dj and recording artists. her first release high eyes was featured on our summer sampler and floated onto the dance floor and into the consciousness of dj s around the world. oona studied sound design in the usa before moving to berlin over the summer of 2015 to continue honing and crafting her sound. her first full ep for adid features deep dreamscapes and innovative arrangements underpinned by solid grooves that capture emotive, twisted melodic expressions. she and her music are a trip to the depths.

the second of this year’s smd singles on their own delicacies label is features another two original tracks, leading with the hypnotic, late night techno loping of “remember in reverse”, drenched in glistening synths. the second track, “soft attack” takes a much more direct approach, with a brash battering of crash cymbals on every 4th bar marking time as a sinuous synth melody curls around the rhythmatic trunk. “soft attack (drum version)” pares it down even further, excising the melody for a minimal dj tool. also included here is a remix of ‘remember in reverse” from 90s mid west techno legend, dj hyperactive, who we’re super excited to have on this release. he extensive 11 minute rework transforms the track, sprinkling it with subtle doses of acid. after a short hiatus following their modular-only, desert recorded last album “whorl”, during which smd s james ford found himself on production duties for everyone and their dog, smd are back with bunch of techno cuts on their own delicacies label. over a couple of months in jas shaw s newly re-located synth-dense studio in leafy kent, which saw smd once again experiment with live jams as the basis for their production, they’ve pulled together a selection of eight tracks for release as a series of four singles over the coming months. smd fans will note that the earlier naming convention of delicacies has fallen by the wayside – for the simple reason that we’ve pretty much run out of weird and wonderful food stuffs to steal names from. instead, a semi-random automated process has been used to create the track names.

so when stu gardner was rounding up a late night studio session, putting the finishing musical touches to a t.v production he had been commissioned for, he thought he would use the last few hours to record one more song. wow are we glad he did. “don’t fight the love” is making movements in the disco circles and with the modern soul boys. an unnamed female vocalist gives you the performance of her life! this had been sitting dormant until 1980.

zizkov is the name of a certain shady prague neighbourhood, where fox experienced a lot of happy, and at the same time sad moments. favourite place on earth.

four new loose and beautiful metropolitan house grooves from prolific nyc producer j albert aka jio albert whose mantra (as always) is to keep it simple, and of course, keep it strictly j! in addition to the grime beats he’s been releasing on soundcloud under the dj osom alias, jio has also explored other genres with a recent black opal release and a 12inch on his own exotic dance records imprint. strictly j, though is his scruffy take classic house on zones more into the hot music-soho vibes. characterized by busy percussion, off-kilter downtown beats, stops and starts, scattered breaks, and weirdly breezy melodies, these tracks are roomy def down for the summer. interestingly enough, i was subletting jios room last summer in ridgewood, queens and was sitting next to him as he made some of these tracks while i worked my tech support job. he was listening to a lot of buddy rich, bill evans, and jeremy steig at the time.

the excellent field label embarks on a new mini trilogy of eps that will -present a magical journey through modern-day trance.- first up in the series is artefakt with their three track effort the final theory. dutch producers robin koek and nick lapien make up artefakt, and between them they excel at moody voodoo music on labels like delsin. they open this latest ep with the title track, a deep, spacious house roller with subtle pads and gentle acid that perform slow motion acrobatics for nearly ten minutes. it is suspensory, dreamy music that works on the head as well as the heel. moving horizon is then less doleful and introspective but just as deep, with sweeping pads add a sense of scale, busy drums bring the dynamism and icy percussive sounds adding a sense of urgency. last but not least, solaris is a fatter, more physical groove with claps and gloopy bass, acid flashes and trancey pads all fleshing out a lush and deep electro workout. this is heavenly stuff that cannot fail to get inside your head and heart.
